Security Report

3.8
Use Caution3.8High Risk

deskcommand is a local developer tool with no network calls, no hardcoded secrets, and no exfiltration patterns, and its broad permissions (arbitrary shell commands, unrestricted file read/write/move/delete, process kill) match its stated purpose. The main concern is that the config keys 'blockedCommands' and 'allowedDirectories' are stored and exposed through get_config and set_config_value but are never enforced, so users may believe restrictions exist when they do not. Shell execution and filesystem access are unrestricted by design and the server has no authentication, which is acceptable for a local stdio server but should be clearly documented. Supply chain analysis found 4 known vulnerabilities in dependencies (0 critical, 2 high severity). Package verification found 1 issue.

Security scores are indicators to help you make informed decisions, not guarantees. Always review permissions before connecting any MCP server.

Permissions Required

This plugin requests these system permissions. Most are normal for its category.

File System Read

Reads files on your machine. Normal for tools that analyze or process local data.

File System Write

Writes or modifies files on your machine. Check that this is expected for the tool.

Shell Command Execution

Runs commands on your machine. Be cautious — only use if you trust this plugin.

process_spawn

Check that this permission is expected for this type of plugin.

system_info

Check that this permission is expected for this type of plugin.

How to Install

Add this to your MCP configuration file:

      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@reneturcios/deskcommand"
      ],
      "command": "npx"
    }

deskcommand

Work on the local machine from the command line or as a stdio MCP server: start and drive terminal processes, read and write files, make surgical text edits, move files, inspect metadata, and search file contents — with configuration, usage and recent-call tools alongside.

Filesystem and search are real local implementations. Search runs as a session: start_search walks the tree (skipping node_modules, .git and dist) and returns a session id whose results paginate with get_more_search_results. edit_block replaces an exact text block and refuses ambiguous edits — a block that occurs more than once needs an explicit expected count. Terminal processes run behind an injectable executor; the default spawns real shell processes and buffers their output, so read_process_output returns only output you have not seen yet.

Two honest simplifications against the toolset this is modelled on: write_pdf writes the given content as-is (no PDF layout engine), and search executes synchronously in-process rather than streaming from a ripgrep subprocess.
