Security Report

5.6
Moderate5.6Moderate Risk

videokit is a clean local video tool that builds ffmpeg and ffprobe argument arrays and runs them via execFile without a shell, so shell injection is not a concern. The only notable points are that file paths are passed through without restriction (expected for a local file tool) and that ffmpeg's protocol handling could let a path argument reference a URL, both rated low. Permissions match the stated purpose of local video processing. Supply chain analysis found 4 known vulnerabilities in dependencies (0 critical, 2 high severity). Package verification found 1 issue.

Permissions Required

This plugin requests these system permissions. Most are normal for its category.

File System Read

Reads files on your machine. Normal for tools that analyze or process local data.

File System Write

Writes or modifies files on your machine. Check that this is expected for the tool.

process_spawn

Check that this permission is expected for this type of plugin.

videokit

Local video file tools as a CLI and a stdio MCP server in one bin. Probe a video for duration, dimensions and codecs; extract a thumbnail, frames or the audio track; trim, transcode and resize.

All work is built as ffmpeg/ffprobe argument arrays (execFile, never a shell string) behind an injectable executor, and probe results are parsed from ffprobe's JSON output — fields a file does not carry come back as null, never invented. This package bundles no ffmpeg: host runs use the host's binaries, and when they are absent the spawn error (ENOENT) is the tool error.

Install

npx -y @reneturcios/videokit mcp

CLI

videokit mcp
videokit probe <file>
videokit thumbnail <file> <output> [timestamp-seconds]
videokit audio <file> <output>
videokit trim <file> <output> <start-seconds> [duration-seconds]
videokit resize <file> <output> <width> <height>
videokit --version

Exit codes: 0 success, 1 ffmpeg error, 2 usage error.
